Hugh Jackman has introduced his close friend and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds to a beloved Australian tradition: the shoey. The Wolverine star took to social media to share a video of the two celebrating another successful race by the BONDS Flying Roos team in the SailGP competition. Jackman and Reynolds co-own the Australian SailGP team, which is the main focus of their upcoming, yet-to-be-named docuseries for Disney+.
The Shoey Tradition
The shoey was popularized as a post-race celebration by Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. Traditionally, it involves drinking beer from a sweaty boot. Staying true to the Aussie spirit, Jackman used a ceramic Converse sneaker (admittedly a cheat) to celebrate with his actor pal. "I would say it's been a good 35 years since my last shoey!!!" Jackman captioned the clip on Instagram.
Viral Reaction
The moment quickly went viral. Fans flooded the comments on Jackman's post, expressing their delight at seeing the co-stars reunited. One fan wrote, "Way to throw down that shoey … Even after 35 years you still got it! Congrats to @bondsflyingroos; even after such a rough start to the race weekend congrats on such a magnificent win!" Another added, "This might just be the hottest video you've ever posted." A third fan commented, "Ahaha this is EVERYTHING!!!" The word "iconic" appeared multiple times.
Friendship and Collaboration
Reynolds and Jackman's friendship famously began when they co-starred in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They reunited for the massive blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. Their friendship is one of Hollywood's most famously entertaining, characterized by a deep, genuine bond masked by a hilarious, decade-long public "feud" where they roast each other publicly.
Upcoming Docuseries
Speaking about their upcoming SailGP docuseries, the actors expressed their excitement about teaming up again on a more personal level. "This is our first collaboration since Deadpool & Wolverine and we once again anticipate action, comedy, heart but with a lot more water. And (fingers crossed) pirates. We hope there's pirates in SailGP," they said in a joint statement. The official release date of the series has not yet been announced, as the current 2026 SailGP championship season is still underway.
