Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson has assured fans he’ll be back stronger after two significant injuries temporarily derailed his music comeback.
The 28-year-old former swimmer revealed he currently “can’t walk or talk” after undergoing vocal cord surgery and then dislocating his knee while rehearsing for a new music video.
Injuries Force Delay
“The universe is serving it to me this year,” Simpson wrote alongside a photo of himself on crutches.
Simpson first revealed in May he had suffered a serious haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords while recording new music. The injury forced the Gold Coast-born performer to cancel promotional appearances for his latest single and delay work on his upcoming album.
In a health update posted on Tuesday, Simpson said after months of vocal rest, doctors had decided surgery was the best option.
“An update on where I’ve been: I’ve been on and off vocal rest for close to 3 months trying to heal a damaged vocal cord,” he wrote.
“We decided to operate to aid the recovery.
“Then I dislocated my knee rehearsing for a new music video and we had to push surgery back to let my knee settle.
“I can’t walk or talk for some time now, and no singing or dancing for months to come.”
Embracing Forced Rest
Despite the setbacks, Simpson said he was trying to embrace the forced break after years of pushing himself physically and mentally.
“I’m taking time to reflect and understand this for what it is: forced rest,” he said.
“The album and live shows have to wait, but I’ve got some work to share while I’m down for the count.
“You can’t hold me down! I’ll be back stronger.”
Simpson added he still managed to complete filming the music video despite the setbacks.
From Pop Star to Olympian and Back
The Queenslander first rose to fame at just 14 after releasing hit pop songs iYiYi and Home to Mama. He later put his music career on hold to pursue professional swimming. He won two Commonwealth Games medals but returned to music after a six-year hiatus when he failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Simpson’s comeback has included the release of two new singles: Baby Blue and When It Comes to Loving You.
