Train services in Sydney have returned to normal after urgent signal repairs caused major disruptions during peak hour this morning. The issue, described as 'complicated' by Transport for NSW, occurred at Harris Park and affected multiple lines serving Western Sydney.
Transport for NSW had urged passengers on the T1 North Shore & Western Line, T2 Inner West & Leppington Line, T5 Cumberland Line, and Blue Mountains Line to allow extra travel time. The T5 line was temporarily suspended but later resumed at reduced frequency.
Rail operations executive director Jas Tumber said the signal failure began at 4am and was resolved about four hours later. 'All those lines are fully operational, and the teams are working very hard now to recover the network and get the timetable back in order, which will be by around midday,' he told ABC Radio Sydney.
Some trains ran more than an hour late, and commuters faced significant delays. One passenger reported waiting 1.5 hours at Harris Park, calling the situation 'very inconvenient' and 'frustrating' for the start of the week.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said most services were running on time, but the T9 Northern Line and T5 Cumberland Line may still experience minor impacts. The biggest service gaps were between Blacktown and Penrith.
