Qatar Airways has announced it will return to Canberra Airport from December 2026, restoring a vital international link that was severed during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent geopolitical tensions. The airline will operate five weekly flights between Doha and Canberra, with a stopover in either Sydney or Melbourne, depending on final route planning.
Background of the Suspension
The carrier suspended its Canberra services in early 2020 as the pandemic grounded global air travel. However, the hiatus was prolonged by a diplomatic dispute between Australia and Qatar over air rights, which saw the Australian government block additional Qatar Airways flights into major hubs. The decision, later reversed in 2024, had left Canberra without a direct Middle Eastern connection, forcing travelers to transit through Sydney or Melbourne.
Details of the Resumption
Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron confirmed the return, stating that the flights would provide a significant boost to the local economy. "This is a game-changer for the capital region, offering business and leisure travelers a seamless link to one of the world's largest aviation hubs," Byron said. The service is expected to carry up to 250 passengers per flight, adding over 60,000 seats annually to the Canberra market.
Economic and Travel Impact
The resumption is projected to inject an estimated $150 million per year into the local economy through tourism, business travel, and freight capacity. Qatar Airways' cargo division will also utilize the flights to export Australian produce, including fresh meat and dairy, to Middle Eastern and European markets. According to the airline, the route will support over 500 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
Strategic Importance
Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer emphasized the airline's commitment to Australia. "Canberra is a key market for us, and we are delighted to resume services. This route strengthens our network and offers passengers from the capital access to over 160 destinations worldwide," he said. The flights will operate on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring the airline's award-winning Qsuite business class.
Competition and Future Outlook
The return of Qatar Airways intensifies competition on international routes from Canberra, which currently has limited long-haul services. Virgin Australia and Qantas operate domestic and trans-Tasman flights, but the Doha connection will be the only direct link to the Middle East. Local tourism bodies have welcomed the announcement, anticipating a surge in inbound visitors from Europe and Asia.
