Kmart Recalls Magic Sand Products Over Asbestos Contamination Fears
Kmart recalls magic sand over asbestos fears

Urgent Recall Issued for Popular Children's Toy

Australian retail giant Kmart has initiated an urgent nationwide recall for several of its popular magic sand products following laboratory tests that identified potential traces of asbestos. The recall affects the 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set and individual tubs of blue, green, and pink magic sand, which were sold through Kmart and Target stores across the country, as well as via online platforms and the company's app.

Safety Risk and Immediate Actions Required

Kmart has explicitly advised all customers to stop using these products immediately. While the company clarified that respirable asbestos fibres were not detected in tested samples and the risk of airborne fibres in the product's current state is low, the potential hazard exists if the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising.

The recall has prompted significant concern among parents and educational institutions. More than a dozen schools and preschools in the Australian Capital Territory were partially closed on Friday following an asbestos warning issued for various children's coloured sand products. WorkSafe ACT has been coordinating testing and remediation efforts, with ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry expected to provide an update on the status of school closures.

Proper Disposal Procedures

Kmart has issued specific safety guidelines for customers disposing of the recalled products. Consumers are instructed to:

  • Wear disposable gloves and a mask when handling the product
  • Either return the product in its original tub or double-bag it securely
  • Keep the product out of children's reach during the disposal process
  • Avoid disposing of the products in general household waste

The retailer emphasized that asbestos is a prohibited substance in Australia and stated the recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure to ensure customer safety. Customers with concerns about the recalled products are encouraged to contact Kmart customer service for further assistance and information regarding returns or refunds.
