A worker has died in an incident on the New England Highway, north of Newcastle, during roadworks for the M1 extension project. Police say the man was standing behind a parked truck when he was allegedly struck by a material transfer vehicle (MTV) just before midnight on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to the highway at Tarro following reports of the accident. The male driver of the MTV was taken to Maitland Hospital for mandatory testing. A crime scene has been established, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
John Holland and Gamuda, the joint venture responsible for the southern section of the M1 extension from Black Hill to Raymond Terrace, confirmed in a statement that one of its workers was fatally injured late last night. Work onsite has stopped, and all staff and contractors are being offered counselling and support.
The joint venture stated it is assisting NSW Police, SafeWork NSW, and Comcare with their investigations. An MTV is a machine used to transfer asphalt for building and resurfacing roads.
