At least 44 people nationwide have been infected, including 18 in NSW, two in South Australia, 15 in Queensland and nine in Victoria. Symptoms typically appear within six to 72 hours and can include headache, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Most people recover within a week with rest and fluids, but infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness and may require antibiotics or hospitalisation.

Health authorities are continuing to investigate alongside the NSW Department of Primary Industries and other jurisdictions. Anyone experiencing prolonged or severe symptoms is advised to seek medical attention. For non-urgent advice, contact Healthdirect or speak with a GP or pharmacist.
