A funeral parlour and chapel in Maylands is set for a $5 million redevelopment, with plans submitted to extend the site at 41-48 Whatley Crescent. The application, lodged by VAER Design on behalf of FTF Pty Ltd, proposes a new funeral parlour and office space across multiple lots.
Lots 41-42 currently house Christian Funerals Maylands, while the remaining lots are vacant and cleared. The site is located approximately 350 metres from Meltham railway station, 260 metres from the Maylands activity centre, and five kilometres north-east of the Perth CBD.
The proposal includes an office, an extended funeral parlour with a reception area, viewing room, meeting rooms, body preparation area, fridges, toilets, and internal long-vehicle parking for hearses. The design ensures that body loading and unloading occurs within the building, out of public view.
Operating hours are planned for 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. The office component would accommodate 25 permanent staff, with up to 30 staff maximum onsite plus casual staff as required. The proposal states the office will create and support jobs in construction, operations, cleaning, and maintenance, while the funeral parlour will provide a valuable service to the local community.
Parking includes 33 external bays and 19 internal bays, with the funeral parlour service area accessed via Ferguson and Charles streets. Currently, the parlour has on-site parking for eight cars, with additional free parking on Charles Street.
