Decades-Old Explosives Unearthed Under Kalgoorlie Office

Construction workers in Kalgoorlie have discovered a sack of antique explosives while renovating the back deck of a surveying company on Boulder Road. The find occurred just before 11am on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from police and emergency services.

Element Geospatial team leader Matt Jones said the builders were demolishing the deck when they uncovered a hessian sack containing old mining explosives. “They appear just to be old mining explosives in sort of a hessian sack … they look to have been there for decades — they're quite damaged and waterlogged,” he said.

Police have cordoned off the area and established an exclusion zone around the building. The bomb squad has been called from Perth to safely dispose of the material. Jones noted that the builders acted promptly, contacting police first. “The builders were really good — they rang us straight away … they rang the police first,” he said.

Authorities have stated there is no immediate threat to the public, but several police officers have been deployed to maintain community safety. The public is advised to avoid the area until the bomb squad renders it safe.
