A severe cockroach infestation at a public housing unit in Perth's inner west has spread to neighboring apartments, prompting several residents to consider breaking their leases. The affected unit is part of a multi-unit complex, and the landlord of an adjoining apartment, John De Leo, described the situation as 'frightening' and worsening over months.
Mr. De Leo said his tenant has expressed a desire to leave after just two months due to the pests invading his bedding. Other tenants have also complained to their property management and are seeking to break their leases. The infestation was first noticed in January when a smoke alarm in the public housing unit sounded constantly, and cockroaches were seen crawling on walls.
Residents contacted the strata company, which then notified the Department of Housing in February, but little action was taken until Mr. De Leo spoke to ABC Radio Perth. Following media attention, the Department informed him that staff and a pest controller would attend the property this Friday.
The Department of Housing and Works acknowledged residents' concerns in a statement, saying it is working with the tenant and actively managing the issue. It encouraged public housing tenants facing pest control difficulties to contact their housing service officer for assistance.
