A five-year-old girl from Newport has had her severed finger successfully reattached following a rapid response from NHS staff. Lexi's finger was sliced off when it became trapped in a front door on Sunday afternoon.
Her brother J-Mal, 14, picked up the severed fingertip just before the family dog could get it. A neighbour drove Lexi and her mother, Kelly Probert-Wilmott, to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport at around 16:00 BST.
Hospital staff immediately placed the finger on ice. Lexi was then transferred to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, where surgeons reattached the finger within five hours of the accident.
Her mother praised the NHS staff, saying they were 'brilliant' despite often receiving negative press. She described Lexi as 'really brave' throughout the ordeal, noting that her hand currently resembles 'a boxing glove' as the finger heals.
