Two Bunbury Backpacker Hostels Closed Over Asbestos and Safety Risks

Two popular backpacker hostels in Bunbury, Western Australia, have been forced to close due to serious health and safety concerns, including potential asbestos exposure. The City of Bunbury issued formal closure notices on February 6, citing ongoing compliance issues that posed risks to residents.

The closures of the Wander Inn and the Dolphin Retreat have left dozens of workers and visitors scrambling for accommodation in a region already facing a short-term housing shortage. The city stated that an urgent asbestos risk was identified at one of the premises, and other compliance issues had not been addressed, leaving no option but to shut the hostels.

A backpacker at the Wander Inn reported being told to leave by the end of the week. Both hostels declined to comment on the matter. A 'for sale' sign was placed in front of the Dolphin Retreat, indicating its closure.

The Bunbury-Geographe Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed concern that the closures would impact local businesses struggling to find staff accommodation. The City of Bunbury acknowledged the difficulty caused but emphasized that health risks could not be ignored.
