Mosman Park Apartment Development Approved Despite Resident Protests

A controversial $76 million apartment and shopping complex in Mosman Park has been granted additional road and verge works, despite strong opposition from nearly 100 residents at a council meeting this week. The meeting required a second room to accommodate the crowd who spoke against granting developer Australian Development Capital a Permit for Activities on Thoroughfares (PAT) for works on adjacent roads, verges, and the creation of 13 street parking bays.

The five-storey Mos Lane development was approved by the WA Planning Commission in August, overriding final objections from the council and locals. However, the developer subsequently sought the town's approval for the PAT, which members of the Mosman Heights Action Group argued amounted to ceding public land and would create traffic and safety issues.

Resident Sheree Pudney described the permit as a public land grab by a developer who failed to make necessary provisions for street-level parking and easy access. Despite these concerns, a majority of council members, including Mayor Paul Shaw, voted 5-1 to approve the application. Shaw stated that refusing the permit would likely lead to State Government intervention, undermining the town's ability to hold the developer accountable for ongoing costs and potential rent.
