Tottenham Hotspur have completed their third summer signing, securing Dutch international centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for £52 million. The 26-year-old defender has signed a long-term contract, reuniting with former Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who now manages Spurs.
Defensive Overhaul at Spurs
After a disastrous 2025-26 campaign in which De Zerbi's side barely avoided relegation with a final-day victory over Everton, Tottenham have prioritised strengthening their backline. The club conceded 122 goals over the past two league seasons, prompting a major rebuild funded by majority owners, the Lewis family.
Van Hecke joins left-back Andy Robertson and centre-back Marcos Senesi, both of whom arrived on free transfers earlier this window. De Zerbi identified Van Hecke as a key component of the defensive transformation, having worked with him during two successful seasons at Brighton.
Player and Manager Reactions
Van Hecke expressed his delight at the move: "It’s a huge honour to become a Spurs player and when you join such a big club, it’s a dream come true. I already have a really strong connection with the head coach, who I’m looking forward to working with again. Micky [van de Ven] has also told me some great things about the club, so I can’t wait to get started."
De Zerbi praised the defender's qualities: "Jan Paul is someone I know very well from our time together at Brighton, and I’m delighted to be working with him again. He is a strong, intelligent centre-back who is brave in possession and plays with personality. Those are important qualities for the way I want our team to set up."
Van Hecke's Career Path
Van Hecke began his career at NAC Breda in the Netherlands before Brighton signed him in 2020. He gained experience through season-long loans at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers before De Zerbi handed him his Brighton debut during the 2022-23 campaign. His progress earned him a call-up to the Netherlands national team.
The signing marks Tottenham's third acquisition of the summer as they aim to rebuild after back-to-back 17th-place finishes. De Zerbi, who took over with seven matches remaining and secured survival with three wins, has warned that lessons must be learned to avoid a repeat of those struggles.
