Newcastle United have reached an agreement to sign Swiss youth international Johan Manzambi from Basel, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 19-year-old forward is expected to join the Premier League side for a fee in the region of £8 million, with personal terms already agreed.
Manzambi deal details
The deal for Manzambi, who has been capped at Under-19 level for Switzerland, represents a long-term investment for Newcastle. The teenager is known for his pace and technical ability, and is seen as one of the brightest prospects in Swiss football. He will initially link up with Newcastle's Under-21 squad, with a view to breaking into the first team in the coming seasons.
Newcastle's head of recruitment, Steve Nickson, said: "Johan is a player we have tracked for some time. He has immense potential and we are delighted to have secured his signature. He fits the profile of young, hungry players we want to bring to the club."
Guimaraes not for sale
Meanwhile, Newcastle have moved to quash speculation surrounding midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, insisting the Brazilian is not for sale despite reported interest from several top European clubs. The 28-year-old has been a key figure since joining from Lyon in January 2022, and his performances have attracted attention from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.
A club spokesperson stated: "Bruno is an integral part of our plans. There has been no approach for him and he is not for sale at any price. We are building something special here and he is central to that." Guimaraes himself has previously expressed his happiness at St James' Park, saying he feels "at home" in Newcastle.
Impact on Newcastle's squad
The double announcement comes as Newcastle prepare for the new Premier League season, with manager Eddie Howe keen to strengthen his squad while retaining key assets. The club has already been active in the transfer window, having signed defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer and midfielder Lewis Hall on a permanent deal from Chelsea.
With the Manzambi deal, Newcastle continue their strategy of signing promising young talent, while the firm stance on Guimaraes sends a clear message to rivals that their star players are not available. The club is also believed to be in the market for a right winger and a central defender before the window closes.
