Liverpool have secured the signing of Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz, beating Newcastle United to his signature, as the first acquisition under new head coach Andoni Iraola. The club triggered a £34.5 million release clause for the 22-year-old, who will sign a six-year contract after completing a medical on Wednesday in Atlanta, where he is part of the Spain squad for the World Cup.
Iraola's influence key to deal
Liverpool had been monitoring Muñoz's progress for an extended period and accelerated the move following Iraola's appointment, as the head coach was keen to add his compatriot. Iraola, who spent most of his playing career at Athletic Bilbao, continues to closely follow La Liga and has been impressed by Muñoz's performances.
Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen also expressed interest in the winger. Muñoz represented Barcelona and Real Madrid at youth level, and both clubs considered him as a target this summer but opted to pursue other players instead.
Versatility and pace key attributes
Muñoz can operate on either wing or as a central striker, providing the versatility Liverpool desire as they embark on a new era under Iraola. One of his standout qualities is his speed, and a significant part of the club's transfer strategy this summer is to attract players with pace.
The winger has earned two international caps, making his debut in March and scoring in that match against Serbia. He was an unused substitute in the draw against Cape Verde.
Chiesa's future unaffected
Muñoz's arrival will not impact the future of Federico Chiesa. The Italian played a limited role under former manager Arne Slot, but it is believed he could be a better fit for Iraola's system. However, Chiesa is seeking more playing time and is open to a departure.
