Summer holiday bookings bounce back for Jet2 as travel demand surges
Jet2 summer bookings bounce back as travel demand surges

Jet2, the UK's largest tour operator, has reported a significant bounce-back in summer holiday bookings, with a 20% increase compared to the same period last year. The company attributed the surge to strong consumer demand for overseas travel, particularly to popular Mediterranean destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Turkey.

Record booking figures

In a trading update, Jet2 said that summer 2026 bookings are now ahead of pre-pandemic levels, with the company expecting to carry over 20 million passengers this year. The rebound comes after a challenging period for the travel industry, which was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions.

“We are seeing a very strong recovery in demand for summer holidays,” said Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2. “Customers are eager to travel again, and we are seeing record levels of bookings for our flights and package holidays.”

Factors driving recovery

The company cited several factors for the bounce-back, including increased consumer confidence, the removal of travel restrictions, and competitive pricing. Jet2 has also expanded its capacity, adding new routes and increasing frequencies to meet demand. The operator noted that the average selling price for holidays has risen by 5% year-on-year, reflecting higher demand and inflationary pressures.

Industry-wide trends

The positive news from Jet2 aligns with broader trends in the travel industry, with other major operators also reporting strong summer bookings. According to industry body ABTA, UK holidaymakers are expected to take 4 million more overseas trips this summer compared to last year, with spending set to reach £40 billion.

However, the recovery is not without challenges. Jet2 warned that staff shortages and supply chain issues could impact operations, although the company said it is taking steps to mitigate these risks. The operator has also faced criticism over flight delays and cancellations, which it attributes to air traffic control constraints and adverse weather.

Outlook for the rest of the year

Looking ahead, Jet2 said it expects the strong demand to continue into the winter season, with early bookings for winter sun holidays also showing an increase. The company remains cautious about the economic outlook, citing potential headwinds from rising interest rates and the cost of living crisis. Nevertheless, Jet2 expressed confidence in its ability to navigate these challenges, given its strong balance sheet and customer loyalty.

“We are optimistic about the future, but we remain vigilant,” Heapy added. “Our focus is on delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring that our operations run smoothly.”
