The UK government has demanded that Fujitsu immediately compensate victims of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, marking a significant shift in the long-running dispute. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds issued the ultimatum on Wednesday, stating that the Japanese technology giant must begin payments without further delay.
Government's Stance
Reynolds emphasized that Fujitsu has a moral and contractual obligation to redress the hundreds of sub-postmasters who suffered financial ruin, wrongful convictions, and reputational damage due to faulty accounting software. The government has allocated funds for compensation but insists Fujitsu must contribute its share.
Victims' Response
Alan Bates, the former sub-postmaster who led the campaign for justice, welcomed the move but cautioned that payments must be swift and fair. Many victims have waited years for compensation, with some dying before receiving any redress.
Fujitsu's Position
Fujitsu has previously expressed regret but resisted immediate payments, citing ongoing investigations and legal complexities. However, the government's firm stance appears to have left the company with little room to maneuver. A Fujitsu spokesperson said the company is reviewing the request and will respond shortly.
The scandal, which unfolded over two decades, saw over 700 sub-postmasters prosecuted based on faulty Horizon data. The UK government has already paid out around £150 million in interim compensation, but full redress is estimated to cost billions.
Opposition parties have accused the government of being too lenient with Fujitsu, calling for stronger sanctions. Meanwhile, campaigners are urging the government to ensure that victims receive payments before the next general election.
