The Washington Nationals will be without two key players after Major League Baseball handed down suspensions to pitcher Cade Cavalli and catcher Willson Contreras for their involvement in a bench-clearing brawl during Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres.
Suspension Details
Cavalli received a five-game suspension for intentionally throwing at Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr., while Contreras was suspended for three games for escalating the altercation. Both players have appealed the rulings, according to MLB officials.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning at Nationals Park when Cavalli hit Tatis with a 97-mph fastball, prompting Tatis to charge the mound. Contreras then shoved Tatis as he approached, leading to a melee involving both teams.
League Statement
MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill said in a statement: "The actions of Mr. Cavalli and Mr. Contreras were unacceptable and violated the league's code of conduct. We will not tolerate intentional acts that endanger players."
Padres manager Bob Melvin criticized the Nationals' actions, saying: "There is no place in the game for throwing at a player's head. Tatis could have been seriously injured."
Impact on Nationals
The suspensions are a blow to the Nationals, who are already struggling with a 38-45 record. Cavalli, 25, has a 4.02 ERA this season, while Contreras, 33, is hitting .271 with 12 home runs.
Nationals manager Dave Martinez expressed disappointment but accepted the league's decision. "We respect the process. Our focus is on moving forward and preparing for the next series," he said.
Padres Reaction
Tatis, who was not suspended, downplayed the incident. "It's part of the game. Tempers flare, but we move on," he said. The Padres (50-33) lead the NL West by 4.5 games.
MLB also fined an undisclosed number of players from both teams for leaving the dugout during the brawl.
