Bassendean Plans Nature-Based Pump Track to Curb Damage

The Town of Bassendean council is moving forward with plans to develop a nature-based pump track, aiming to reduce environmental damage caused by informal bike trails in the area.

In early May, the town demolished a 20-year-old dirt track near the Bindaring wetlands due to safety concerns. At the April council meeting, Mayor Kathryn Hamilton requested town staff to explore potential sites for a nature-based pump or BMX track and develop a concept plan.

During the May 26 meeting, councillors supported launching an investigation to identify suitable locations for a small to mid-sized facility within the district. The proposed facility would provide a safe, purpose-built space meeting recognised standards, with proper management and insurance coverage.

The town assured that the project location will avoid residential areas. The initiative aims to mitigate environmental damage from informal bike tracks in unsuitable zones. Unauthorised trails will be rehabilitated and revegetated once the project is complete.

Cr Hamilton emphasised the investigation seeks to balance the needs of young riders with environmental protection. "This is about planning for a safer, purpose-built riding space while protecting environmentally sensitive areas and respecting nearby residents," she said. "If a suitable site is identified, we want the community and riders to help shape the concept so the end result is a well-designed facility that meets local needs and supports better outcomes for the district."

The council also endorsed the idea of maintaining or co-managing the site with a formal rider group and approved a $20,000 allocation for investigation and planning work. The community will be invited to contribute to the project concept plan, with delivery expected in the 2026-27 financial year.
