Three men were rescued early Thursday morning after their vessel capsized at Shoal Bay in Port Stephens. Police responded to reports of the capsizing just after 5am on January 1.

Marine Area Command police found the men, aged 42, 43, and 57, clinging to the hull of the overturned boat. The men told police the vessel encountered large waves while attempting to cross the bar off Tomaree Headland.

The men were taken to Shoal Bay and treated by paramedics for mild hypothermia. No other injuries were reported. The vessel was towed from the scene, and NSW Maritime was notified.

In a separate incident later that evening, Marine Rescue Port Stephens assisted a catamaran that struck rocks on the ocean side of Fingal Island. Rough conditions prevented a crew member from boarding, so an escort was established, guiding the catamaran safely to anchor in Shoal Bay.
