Ski resorts across Victoria and New South Wales have received a much-needed dump of snow, ending a dry start to the winter season and bringing relief to operators and skiers alike. The heaviest falls occurred overnight, with some resorts reporting up to 30 centimetres of fresh snow.
Heavy Snowfall Brings Relief
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a cold front swept across the Australian Alps, delivering significant snowfalls to elevations above 1,200 metres. Falls Creek in Victoria recorded 25 centimetres, while Perisher in NSW received 30 centimetres. The snow is expected to continue over the weekend, with further falls forecast.
"This is exactly what we needed," said a spokesperson for Falls Creek Resort. "The early season was tough, but this snowfall has transformed the slopes and we're expecting a great weekend."
Impact on Ski Season
The late arrival of snow had raised concerns about the viability of the ski season, particularly for smaller resorts. However, the recent dump has boosted snow depths to above-average levels for this time of year. Mount Buller reported a base of 40 centimetres, while Thredbo recorded 45 centimetres.
"We've gone from worrying about opening to having some of the best early-season conditions in years," said a Thredbo spokesperson. "The snowmaking team has done an incredible job, but natural snow is always welcome."
Economic Boost for Regional Communities
The snowfall is expected to provide a significant economic boost to regional communities that rely on winter tourism. The ski industry contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the Victorian and NSW economies each year.
