Shellharbour FC will host the inaugural PCFS Logistics Shellharbour FC Cup from Friday, February 6, at Barrack Heights Sports Field, aiming to set a benchmark for the upcoming Illawarra Premier League season. The three-day tournament features Shellharbour FC, Wollongong United, Cringila Lions, and South Coast United, with free entry for spectators.
New player-coach Nikodin Matic, who replaces Rod Williams, will lead a young side with an average age of 23. Matic, the 2025 Golden Glove winner, will start in goal and hopes to transition to coaching only in the next few years. He described the cup as a chance to build community atmosphere and gauge the team's progress.
Shellharbour FC has strengthened its squad with recruits including James Cakovski, who won the NPL 1 under-20s Golden Boot for Rockdale and Mount Druitt, and 18-year-old Lucas Belcheff from Sutherland Sharks. Captain Cody Wehmeyer noted the increased squad depth and competition for starting spots.
The cup will include youth-grade and first-grade matches, with winners receiving $1500 and $1000 respectively. Matic emphasized the importance of winning habits, while Wehmeyer highlighted the tournament's role in exposing younger players to the intensity of the Illawarra Premier League.
