Sam Kerr Returns for Matildas on Australian Soil in 2-0 Win Over New Zealand

Sam Kerr made her return for the Matildas on Australian soil for the first time in two years on Tuesday night, playing 45 minutes in a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in Adelaide. The match served as preparation for the Asian Cup, which begins in March 2026.

Alanna Kennedy and Hayley Raso scored the goals for Australia, while Kerr showcased her trademark skill and energy, lifting the team's confidence. Coach Joe Montemurro praised Kerr's impact, saying, 'She brings this level of confidence within the group. Everyone just feels a little bit taller, stronger, better, having Sam around.'

Kerr, who plays for Chelsea, expressed her joy at being back on home soil. 'Sometimes we lose sight of why we play football. Tonight just felt like one of those moments where I could just really go out there and enjoy it and have fun,' she said.

Looking ahead to the Asian Cup, Kerr emphasized the importance of staying fit and replicating the success of the 2023 World Cup, where the Matildas finished fourth. 'It's a really big tournament. We want to go as far as we can. The main focus now for all of us is just to stay fit and ready for the Asian Cup,' she said.

Montemurro noted that the squad has grown stronger during Kerr's absence, with players now able to adapt to different roles. 'The beauty of this squad, we have now elevated the squad holistically, in a big way,' he said.
