A dramatic shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday afternoon saw a quick-thinking paddleboarder rescue a 29-year-old woman who suffered serious leg injuries. Witnesses reported seeing blood in the water as the attack unfolded about 50 metres offshore.
The Incident
The woman was swimming when a shark, believed to be a great white, attacked her shortly before 2pm. A paddleboarder nearby heard her screams and paddled over, pulling her onto his board. He then brought her to shore, where lifeguards and paramedics provided emergency care.
Response and Aftermath
NSW Ambulance treated the woman for deep lacerations to her leg before transporting her to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition. The beach was closed for 24 hours as authorities searched for the shark. Surf Life Saving NSW deployed drones and jetskis to monitor the area.
Local MP Matt Thistlethwaite praised the paddleboarder's bravery, stating, "It was an incredibly courageous act. The woman is lucky to be alive." The paddleboarder, who declined to be named, said he acted on instinct. "There was a lot of blood in the water. I just knew I had to get her out quickly," he said.
Shark Activity in the Area
The attack follows increased shark sightings along the NSW coast. Experts say warmer waters and baitfish movements may be contributing factors. The last fatal shark attack in Sydney occurred in 2022 at Little Bay. Authorities urge swimmers to stay between the flags and follow safety advice.
