Community Leaders Unite
On Sunday, approximately 180 community leaders from across Sydney gathered at the Salvation Army Parramatta for the Sydney Alliance Discernment Convention. This afternoon of community action aimed to empower civic groups to tackle issues ranging from housing supply to social isolation.
Empathy Over Division
Bec Reidy from Bidwill Uniting emphasised the difference between divisive politics and collaborative movements. "Parties like One Nation only survive because they drive wedges, whereas movements like this come together not just based on evidence and research and expertise, but they also come together based on empathy," she said.
The convention highlighted how grassroots organisations can offer an alternative to polarising political forces by focusing on shared concerns and collective problem-solving. Participants worked on strategies to address local needs, demonstrating that community-led initiatives can effectively counter the rise of populist parties.
