Bassendean Intersection Seeks Traffic Lights After 23 Crashes

The Town of Bassendean council has endorsed a move to secure funding for traffic lights at the crash-prone intersection of Collier Road and Iolanthe Street, following a history of 23 recorded crashes over five years.

Council Supports Funding Application

At its June meeting, the council voted to seek financial support from the 2027-28 Federal and State government Black Spot Program and the Main Roads WA low-cost urban road safety program. The project is estimated to cost approximately $400,000, with the town contributing $133,333 if the application succeeds.

Crash History and Congestion

A report to the council highlighted the intersection's extensive crash history and traffic congestion as key factors driving the decision. According to the report, there have been 23 crashes at the site, along with "significant congestion, particularly at peak travel times during the day." The report stated: "The intersection of Collier Road and Iolanthe Street has been identified as a priority location requiring improved traffic control measures to reduce crash risk and enhance safety." Installing traffic signals would "provide safer turning movements under signalised control."

Details of Crashes

A Main Roads WA spokesperson confirmed the crash data: "Of these 23 crashes, 13 resulted in property damage only with no one requiring hospitalisation or medical treatment, nine required medical attention and one resulted in a person involved in the accident being admitted to hospital." The crashes occurred between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2025.

Broader Safety Improvements

In addition to the traffic light proposal, the council approved a separate application to Main Roads WA's low-cost urban road safety program for $400,000 for safety improvements in the Broadway Arboretum precinct. Staff recommended splitting the project over two years. The precinct was selected after crash data identified roads in the area with higher speeds and more crashes.
