The Australian Ice Hockey League has decided to keep the 2026 finals series in Melbourne, snubbing Canberra's bid despite record-breaking fan support. The decision was influenced by player complaints about the ice quality at the AIS Arena, where the Canberra Brave moved home games last year.
Players reported ruts the size of coins across the uneven surface, with one anonymous player comparing the rink to a 'carpark'. The league cited Melbourne Icehouse's 'proven track record' and 'excellent playing surface' as key factors in its choice.
In response, Brave owner Stephen Campbell invested $500,000 in an Engo Ice Panther resurfacer, described as a 'lawnmower on steroids', and sent an ice technician to train with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Campbell acknowledged the surface was 'not excellent' but expressed confidence in improvements for the upcoming season.
The AIS Arena hosted 11 sell-out games with over 30,000 fans last year, creating an electric atmosphere. However, the league prioritized ice quality over seating capacity, which is higher in Canberra than at Melbourne Icehouse.
