Western Australia's Rent Relief Program has been extended to June 30, 2025, after distributing $20 million to help tenants avoid eviction since its launch in December 2023. The program, a partnership between Anglicare WA, Vinnies WA, and the State Government, provides one-off payments of up to $5,000 to eligible tenants, along with lease negotiation support and social advocacy.
High Demand and Key Demographics
Since its inception, the program has received 11,000 inquiries and processed payments for 4,557 applicants. The largest recipient cohort was aged 36 to 45, followed by those 26 to 35 and 46 to 55. Nearly three-quarters of applications came from the Perth metro region.
Charities Welcome Extension but Call for More
Anglicare WA CEO Mark Glasson welcomed the government's support but stressed the ongoing need. "The level of demand shows the number of families in financial crisis," he said. "We hear personal stories of people saying it has absolutely changed their lives. The whole idea is to give people some free air, so they can think without the continual burden of losing their home." He added that rent relief should remain until the rental vacancy rate balances between 2.5% and 3.5%.
Vinnies WA CEO Ann Curran described the program as an early intervention lifeline. "Every day our teams work with people overwhelmed by high living costs and low rental vacancies. By stepping in to clear arrears, this program removes the terrifying threat of eviction and provides financial breathing room," she said.
State Budget Boosts Funding
The 2026-27 State Budget included a $13.5 million boost for the program. Treasurer Rita Saffioti called it an important investment to help vulnerable people stay in their homes and keep their lives on track.
