Burnham Warns Labour Must Win Back Reform Voters

Andy Burnham has issued a stark warning to the Labour Party, urging it to win back voters who have defected to Reform UK. The Greater Manchester mayor said Labour must reconnect with traditional supporters who feel abandoned by the party.

Burnham's Warning

Speaking at an event in Makerfield, Burnham said Labour cannot take its traditional base for granted. He noted that many working-class voters have turned to Reform UK because they feel Labour no longer represents their interests.

“We have to listen to why people are leaving us,” Burnham said. “It’s not enough to just criticise Reform. We need to offer a positive vision that speaks to their concerns.”

Reform UK's Appeal

Reform UK has made significant inroads in Labour strongholds, particularly in the north of England. The party, led by Richard Tice, has attracted voters disillusioned with both Labour and the Conservatives.

Burnham acknowledged that Labour’s focus on cultural issues has alienated some traditional supporters. “People want us to talk about their jobs, their homes, their public services. Not just the issues that dominate the headlines in London,” he said.

Keir Starmer's Response

Labour leader Keir Starmer has defended his strategy, arguing that the party must appeal to a broad coalition. However, Burnham’s comments highlight internal divisions over how to counter the Reform threat.

Starmer has sought to position Labour as a responsible, centrist alternative to the Conservatives. But Burnham believes the party needs a more radical offer to win back disaffected voters.

Road Ahead

With a general election expected within the next two years, Labour faces a critical challenge. Burnham’s intervention underscores the urgency of addressing the Reform UK threat.

“We have to show people that Labour is on their side,” Burnham said. “If we don’t, we will continue to lose them to parties that offer simple answers to complex problems.”
