Silverstone UTC to Close Despite F1 Backing, Leaving Students in Limbo
Silverstone UTC Closure Leaves Students in Limbo

Silverstone University Technical College (UTC), a specialist school for motor sport engineering and event management, will close permanently in August 2026, leaving around 150 students seeking alternative placements. The decision, announced by the school's board, comes despite strong backing from Formula 1 and the Silverstone circuit, which hosts the British Grand Prix.

Reasons for Closure

The school, located adjacent to the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, has faced declining student numbers for several years. According to a statement from the UTC's board, the school was unable to recruit enough students to remain financially viable. The board said: "Despite the best efforts of staff, students, and our partners, including Silverstone Circuits Ltd and Formula 1, we have been unable to reverse the trend of falling enrollment." The school opened in 2013 with a capacity for 600 students but never reached that number. Current enrollment stands at approximately 150 students, down from a peak of 300 in 2018.

Impact on Students and Staff

The closure will affect students in Years 10 to 13, who will need to transfer to other schools or colleges. The Department for Education (DfE) said it would work with local authorities to ensure all students find suitable places. The school employs 25 teaching and support staff, who will be made redundant. The board said it would support staff in finding new roles.

One parent, whose son is in Year 11, told the BBC: "This is devastating for the students. They chose this school because of its unique focus on motor sport. Now they have to start all over again at a time when they should be preparing for exams."

Reactions from Partners

Silverstone Circuits Ltd expressed disappointment at the closure. A spokesperson said: "We have been proud to support the UTC and its students. It is a shame that the school could not attract enough students to continue." Formula 1 also released a statement: "We are saddened by the news. The UTC has been a valuable pathway for young people into the motor sport industry."

The school had previously received visits from F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, and students had access to the circuit for work experience. However, these partnerships were not enough to sustain the school's finances.

Broader Context

The closure is part of a wider trend of UTCs struggling to maintain enrollment. Since their introduction in 2010, over 20 UTCs have closed or merged. The Silverstone UTC is the third motor sport-themed school to close in the UK, following similar closures in Norfolk and Milton Keynes. Critics argue that the specialist model is too narrow for many students, while supporters say it provides essential skills for industries like motor sport.

The DfE said it would review the UTC program to ensure it delivers value for money. A spokesperson said: "We are committed to ensuring all students have access to high-quality education. The decision to close Silverstone UTC was taken by the board, but we will support affected students."
