A tragic workplace incident has claimed the life of a worker at a construction site in Melbourne's west. The man, believed to be in his 50s, was fatally electrocuted on Monday afternoon while operating a scissor lift that came into contact with overhead power lines.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred around 2pm on Geelong Road in Laverton North. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the site. He has not yet been formally identified.
According to police, the death is not being treated as suspicious, and WorkSafe has been notified. A spokesperson for WorkSafe confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
Project and Company Response
The site is part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, a major infrastructure initiative being delivered by a joint venture between CPB Contractors and John Holland. A spokesperson for the joint venture expressed their condolences and confirmed that the worker was employed by the partnership.
“We confirm that a tragic incident occurred today at the West Gate Tunnel Project, resulting in the loss of life of a worker,” the spokesperson said. “Emergency services attended the site, and we are supporting the relevant authorities, including WorkSafe Victoria, in their investigations.”
The spokesperson added that support is being provided to the worker’s family, friends, and colleagues, and that work at the site has been paused to assist with the investigation. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Safety Concerns
This incident highlights the dangers of working near overhead power lines, particularly with elevated equipment like scissor lifts. Industry experts urge strict adherence to safety protocols, including maintaining safe distances and conducting thorough risk assessments before commencing work.
The investigation by WorkSafe will aim to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and whether any safety breaches occurred.
