Toledo Festival Shooting: 12 Injured, Search Continues

Authorities in Toledo, Ohio, are continuing their search for suspects after a shooting at a cultural festival wounded 12 people on Saturday. The Lucas County prosecutor has vowed that justice will be swift and strong as the investigation enters its third day.

Victims in Stable Condition

The Toledo Police Department reported that all victims, ranging in age from 14 to 61, were in stable condition as of late Sunday. The shooting occurred during the Old West End festival, which featured live music and tours of historic homes.

Multiple Suspects Identified

Deputy Chief of Police Joe Heffernan stated that at least two individuals fired weapons, possibly at each other. No arrests have been made, but detectives are following multiple leads and encourage anyone with information or unseen footage to come forward.

Eyewitness Account

Kevin Berry, an eyewitness, reported seeing a gun thrown to the ground near him and at least five people with gunshot wounds. Videos on social media show spectators scrambling for safety and medical responders treating victims amid festival tents and food trucks.

Prosecutor’s Statement

Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates emphasized that the perpetrators would be caught and face justice. She expressed personal outrage, stating, “This is my home. These are my friends and neighbors. It is not OK.”

Festival Canceled

The second day of the festival was canceled, with organizers citing that it would not be compassionate or possible to continue. The festival typically draws hundreds of attendees to Toledo’s historic district.

Other Shootings in the Region

In Kansas City, Missouri, police are investigating a shooting that wounded nine adults on Saturday, occurring near where England’s national soccer team will be based for the FIFA World Cup. In Cleveland, Ohio, five people were shot during a card game early Sunday, with no suspects in custody. The Gun Violence Archive classifies the Cleveland incident as the 177th mass shooting of the year in the U.S., defined as four or more victims shot or killed.

The United States continues to grapple with high rates of mass shootings, prompting calls for federal gun control measures, though Congress has not enacted substantial reforms.
