Teen Arrested, Ute Seized After Sports Ground Vandalism

A teenage driver has been arrested and a vehicle seized following a police operation targeting vandalism at Canberra sports grounds.

Police Action and Arrest

ACT Policing confirmed on Tuesday that an 18-year-old male driver from Karabar, New South Wales, was arrested after allegedly performing burnouts on the Wanniassa Playing Fields on May 19. The vehicle, a black Toyota Hilux, was stopped on the Monaro Highway at Hume around 12:55 pm on June 16. Road policing officers confirmed it was the same vehicle involved in the incident.

The teenager has not yet been charged, but police say they will continue investigating the damage reported on May 19 and are seeking public assistance for this and other instances of sports ground damage.

Community Reaction

Tuggeranong United president Stan Mitchell welcomed the police update, expressing frustration over recent vandalism that has affected hundreds of players at the club. "It'll hold someone accountable and goes to show that if we can identify people, then the police will take action," Mitchell told The Canberra Times. "There's got to be consequences for behaviour. Others will be wary now, hopefully. They should behave, stay off and be sensible. Look after yourselves and look after your future."

Ongoing Investigation

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incidents or has dashcam footage to come forward. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers ACT, quoting reference number 8403780.

The arrest follows a month-long investigation by Tuggeranong-based police officers. The vehicle was seized as part of the operation.
