Perth Man Loses Home, Life Savings to Romance Scam

An 80-year-old Perth man, Lyle Lambie, has been left homeless after losing his life savings to an elaborate romance scam that drained his finances over three years. Lambie watched helplessly as his home was repossessed by the bank and his belongings packed up, marking the end of more than two decades of residence.

Heartbreak and Devastation

“Devastated. Absolutely devastated,” Lambie said, describing the emotional toll of losing everything. The grandfather had sought companionship online, believing he had found a genuine connection with a woman overseas on Facebook. “I met her on Facebook and I thought it was a genuine woman,” he recalled. “She was saying she’s madly in love with me and everything.”

The virtual relationship quickly turned into a financial trap. The scammer repeatedly requested money through prepaid gift cards, citing emergencies such as hospital stays and travel expenses. “A few times she said she was in hospital and needed help,” Lambie said. “I paid [for an] airfare from America to Australia and paid for passports and everything else and it was just never-ending.”

Financial Ruin Over Three Years

The scam persisted for three years, during which Lambie lost up to $300,000 to the con artist. The financial devastation culminated in the loss of his home, which he had lived in for over 20 years. “We lost everything,” he lamented.

Consumer Protection’s John McMaster highlighted the common tactics used by scammers, emphasizing the importance of vigilance. “Scammers will rely upon secrecy so the most important thing is to talk to people you trust about what you’re experiencing and also to never send money,” McMaster warned.

A Warning to Others

Although it is too late for Lambie, he has bravely shared his story to prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes. “Just be fair and weary and stay off in his scammers,” he said. “It’s online because they’re out to get everything out of you as much as they can.”
