Lachie Perrem, a man in his 20s, has spent five days in critical condition after a robot vacuum cleaner explosion caused a devastating fire at his home in Brabham, Perth. The explosion on Thursday left him with life-threatening burns over approximately 75% of his body, according to his mother, Fiona, who spoke on a GoFundMe page. The fire also destroyed the share house, leaving his fiancee and housemates without a home.
Fire Investigation Points to Vacuum Fault
Investigators from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services determined the fire was accidental, caused by a fault in the robotic vacuum cleaner. The device has been sent to the state's Building and Energy office for further analysis. It remains unclear whether the fault was in the vacuum's electrics or its lithium-ion battery. This is the first reported case of a robotic vacuum cleaner fire, although four fires involving standard vacuum cleaners have occurred in the past two years.
Critical Condition and Medical Treatment
Perrem is being treated for his burns at Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he remains sedated. A South Metropolitan Health Service spokesperson confirmed he was in a critical condition on Tuesday evening. His mother described his long road ahead, including multiple surgeries, extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and months of recovery.
Community Support and GoFundMe Campaign
Perrem's fiancee, Bri Thompson, shared on social media that he is "fighting the biggest battle of his life" and that their entire lives changed in moments. She described him as a giving person who would help anyone. A GoFundMe page launched by his mother on Saturday had raised over $26,000 by Tuesday evening to cover medical costs, car repayments, and housing for his displaced fiancee and housemates.
Impact on Perrem's Social Media Project
Perrem, a trained telecommunications technician, runs a social media project called "The Tradie Vault," which promotes mental health awareness through work site visits and tool giveaways. The project will be paused while he recovers.
