A shooting near a community street festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday left multiple people injured, and police are actively searching for suspects, authorities said.
Officers responded to a report of a person shot near the Old West End Festival at approximately 5:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple shooting victims, according to a statement from the Toledo Police Department.
Police confirmed that "many victims" had been transported to medical facilities but did not specify the number of people shot or the extent of their injuries. Authorities also declined to provide details on what may have led to the shooting.
Kevin Berry, who was sitting in the neighborhood arboretum listening to live music with friends, said he heard several gunshots. "Everybody hit the deck," he recalled. When he looked up, he saw a gun being tossed to the ground less than 50 feet (15 meters) away. Police officers already present for the festival immediately responded.
Berry, who has medical training and served in the U.S. Navy, said he walked around the area looking for potential victims in need of help. He reported seeing at least five people with gunshot wounds. "The folks who were hit were spread out around the arboretum area," he said.
The Old West End Festival is a two-day event in Toledo's historic district featuring live music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping. Berry described it as the "kick-off to Toledo's summer festival season."
More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
