A mother and her two children have been found dead in a property near Bedford, triggering a major police investigation. Bedfordshire Police confirmed that officers discovered the bodies at a house in the village of Wilstead on Tuesday evening.
Discovery and Initial Response
Police were called to the property at around 6:30 PM following concerns for the welfare of the occupants. Upon arrival, they found the bodies of a woman in her 30s and two children, believed to be aged 7 and 10. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have died. We are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding their deaths."
Ongoing Investigation
Police have cordoned off the property and are conducting forensic examinations. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death. Officers are also speaking to neighbors and reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Detective Chief Inspector Lee added: "We are keeping an open mind at this stage and are treating the deaths as unexplained. We urge anyone with information to come forward."
The incident has shocked the local community. Wilstead Parish Council chair Margaret Thompson said: "This is a devastating loss for our village. Our hearts go out to the family. We are offering support to residents who are deeply affected."

Support services have been made available to the family and neighbors. Bedfordshire Police have deployed family liaison officers to support the relatives. The local school attended by the children has also offered counseling to pupils and staff.
According to police statistics, the area has seen a low rate of violent crime in recent years. The last homicide in Bedfordshire occurred in 2024, with an average of 2.3 homicides per 100,000 population, below the national average.
