A 25-year-old man from the Canberra suburb of Duffy has faced the ACT Magistrates Court following an alleged police pursuit that traversed several suburbs of the nation's capital on Wednesday afternoon.
Charges and Court Appearance
The man, whose identity has not been released, was charged with driving a stolen motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving while disqualified. He appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday, where he was remanded in custody to face further proceedings at a later date. According to police, the pursuit began around 3:30 pm on Wednesday when officers attempted to stop a white Holden Commodore believed to be stolen in the suburb of Phillip.
Details of the Pursuit
The alleged chase covered a significant distance, with the driver reportedly ignoring traffic signals and driving at high speeds through residential areas. Police deployed stop sticks near the intersection of Hindmarsh Drive and Yamba Drive in an effort to immobilise the vehicle. The pursuit concluded in the suburb of Greenway, where the driver allegedly abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot. He was apprehended shortly after by police with the assistance of the Dog Operations Unit.
Police have confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident, and no property damage was caused by the pursuit itself. The stolen vehicle was later recovered and will undergo forensic examination.
Legal Proceedings and Community Impact
The man's legal representative did not apply for bail, and the magistrate formally refused bail due to the seriousness of the offences and the risk of further offending. The case has been adjourned to a later date for mention. ACT Policing has reminded the community that pursuits are conducted with public safety as the highest priority, and that such incidents are thoroughly investigated. Acting Detective Inspector Mark Steel said, “Police will always take action to protect the community, and we will pursue those who commit serious offences such as this. We are thankful that no one was injured during this incident.”
The incident has raised concerns among local residents about the frequency of police pursuits in residential areas. However, police have emphasised that each pursuit is assessed on a case-by-case basis with strict operational guidelines.
