Anthony Canty, a EuroMillions winner from Maldon, Essex, has died after a suspected hit-and-run, police have confirmed. The incident occurred on 21 May at 6:30am in Tiptree, where Canty, riding a bicycle, was struck by a black Ford Ka. The driver allegedly fled the scene. Canty was taken to hospital in a serious condition and died four days later.
Details of the Incident
Essex police were called to Maldon Road in Tiptree following reports of a collision between a cyclist and a car. The cyclist, a man in his 30s later identified as Canty, sustained critical injuries. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop. He remains under investigation while inquiries continue.
Canty's Heroic Past
In April 2020, during the first Covid-19 lockdown, Canty saved the life of a police officer who collapsed on a bus due to a heart attack. Canty performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care. Canty later stayed in touch with the officer's partner, dropping off fruit and flowers, and maintained contact after the officer recovered.
Just weeks after the heroic act, in May 2020, Canty won £1 million in a EuroMillions draw. Despite the windfall, Canty, a water supply worker, vowed not to give up his day job. He shared the prize with his partner Katie Sullivan.
Police Appeal
Essex police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has footage of a black Ford Ka being driven in the Tiptree area around the time of the incident to come forward. Information, CCTV, dashcam, or other footage can be provided to the police.
