King's Birthday Long Weekend Double Demerits: What Drivers Must Know
King's Birthday Double Demerits: Key Facts for Drivers

Millions of drivers across Australia face double demerit points during the King's Birthday long weekend, with authorities warning motorists to obey road rules or face severe penalties. Double demerits apply in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory from Friday and will remain in effect through the long weekend until Monday, April 8.

What Offenses Attract Double Demerits?

Drivers caught breaking certain road rules will receive double the usual demerit points. These offenses include:

  • Speeding
  • Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt or wearing it incorrectly
  • Riding a motorcycle without a helmet

Additionally, extra penalties may apply for offenses committed in NSW school zones on Friday. Transport for NSW warns: “You’ll face double the points, not double the fine. You can stop it or cop it.”

Double Demerits in Other States

In Queensland, double demerit points are applied year-round if a driver has committed a previous offense within 12 months. Specifically, double demerits are triggered after a second speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, or motorcycle helmet offense.

However, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory do not have a double-demerit point scheme. Drivers in these states are not subject to double demerits during the King's Birthday long weekend, but standard penalties still apply.

Stay Safe on the Roads

Authorities urge all drivers to be cautious and comply with road rules to avoid fines and demerit points. With increased traffic expected during the long weekend, it is crucial to stay focused, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions. Remember, double demerits are designed to encourage safer driving behavior and reduce road accidents.
