A 33-year-old man from Florey has been arrested and charged in connection with an aggravated burglary that occurred in Gungahlin on Sunday. ACT Policing responded to reports of a break-in at a residence on Gungahlin Place around 6:30 PM, where the suspect allegedly forced entry and stole several items.
Details of the Incident
According to police, the man entered the home through a rear window and made off with electronics, jewellery, and cash. The homeowner, who was not present at the time, returned to find the property ransacked and immediately contacted authorities. Officers from the Gungahlin Police Station attended the scene and collected forensic evidence.
Following a swift investigation, police identified the suspect and executed a search warrant at a property in Florey on Tuesday morning. During the search, they located and seized stolen goods matching the description provided by the victim, along with a knife believed to have been used in the burglary. The man was taken into custody without incident.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The accused has been charged with aggravated burglary, theft, and possession of an offensive weapon. He appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon, where he was remanded in custody to face further hearings next month. Detective Sergeant Mark Richardson of ACT Policing stated, "This arrest demonstrates our commitment to tackling property crime in the Gungahlin region. We urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity."
The value of the stolen property is estimated at approximately $5,000, though some items have been recovered and will be returned to the owner. Police are continuing their inquiries and have not ruled out further charges.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
Local residents have expressed concern over the incident, which is the latest in a series of burglaries in the area. The Gungahlin Community Council has called for increased police patrols and better lighting in public spaces. In response, ACT Policing has announced a temporary boost in visible patrols and will hold a community safety forum next week to discuss crime prevention strategies.
