A former student of the University of Surrey has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot with a crossbow in Guildford. The incident occurred at the Manor Park student village on Thursday morning.
Incident Details
Police were called to reports of a crossbow shooting at approximately 9:50 am. The victim, a man in his 50s who is a member of the university's campus safety team, sustained serious injuries. He is currently being treated at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, which is located near the scene.
A 21-year-old suspect, a Saudi national, was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and remains in police custody. Authorities have stated that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the attack.
Police Investigation
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen of Surrey Police addressed the community's concerns, stating: 'I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.'
He confirmed that the victim remains in a serious condition and that his next of kin are being supported by officers. The investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the assault.
University Response
A University of Surrey spokesperson confirmed that a member of the campus safety team was seriously injured and is receiving medical care. 'Surrey police are leading the investigation and we are giving them our full support,' they added.
