Thames Valley Police are investigating after a cremation urn was found at Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire. The urn was discovered on Monday, June 27, by a member of staff in the grandstand area. Police believe the urn may have been left inadvertently or intentionally, and are appealing for the public's help to identify the deceased and reunite the ashes with their family.

The urn, described as a small, brass-colored container, was found on a seat in the grandstand. It is engraved with a name and dates, but police have not released those details pending family notification. Detective Constable Sarah Jenkins of Thames Valley Police said: "We are treating this matter with sensitivity and are keen to trace the family of the deceased. We urge anyone who may have information about the urn or who may have left it at the racecourse to come forward."
Appeal for Information
Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the racecourse and have spoken to staff and racegoers. Newbury Racecourse management has expressed concern and is cooperating fully with the investigation. A spokesperson said: "We were saddened to hear of this discovery and are doing everything we can to assist the authorities. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased."
Context and Previous Incidents
This is not the first time an urn has been left at a public venue in the UK. In 2019, a similar incident occurred at a London train station, where an urn was left on a platform and later reclaimed by a distraught relative.
