A Brisbane teenager allegedly plotted terrorist attacks after being influenced by the Unabomber manifesto, a court has heard. The 17-year-old appeared in the Brisbane Children's Court on Monday charged with preparing for a terrorist act.
Court Details
The court was told the teenager researched bomb-making techniques and targeted specific locations in Brisbane. Police allege he was inspired by Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, who carried out a series of bombings across the United States between 1978 and 1995.
Magistrate John Costello heard that the teen had downloaded the Unabomber's manifesto and other extremist material. The court was also told he had made notes on potential targets and methods of attack.
Police Investigation
Detectives from the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team arrested the teenager last week after a lengthy investigation. Police will allege the teen had been planning an attack for several months.
Officers searched a home in Brisbane's southern suburbs and seized electronic devices, notebooks, and other items. Police say the teen acted alone and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Legal Proceedings
The teenager did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody. He will appear in court again next month. His lawyer did not comment outside court.
The case has raised concerns about the radicalization of young people online. Experts say the Unabomber's writings continue to attract a following among some extremist circles.
If convicted, the teenager faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
