Body of Missing Hiker Nolan Wells Found on Mississippi Island

The body of 23-year-old Nolan Wells, a hiker who had been missing since June 28, was found on an uninhabited island in the Mississippi River, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Discovery on an Uninhabited Island

According to the Warren County Sheriff's Office, Wells' remains were discovered by a search team on an island near the Mississippi River, approximately 10 miles south of Vicksburg. The island is largely undeveloped and accessible only by boat.

Sheriff Martin Pace stated that the cause of death appears to be accidental drowning, though an autopsy is pending to confirm. No foul play is suspected.

Search Efforts and Timeline

Wells was last seen on June 28 when he left his home in Vicksburg for a hike in the area. When he failed to return, family members reported him missing. Search efforts involved multiple agencies, including the Warren County Sheriff's Office, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and volunteers.

“We are grateful for the tireless work of all involved in the search,” said Wells' mother, Sarah Wells, in a statement. “We are heartbroken but find some comfort in knowing what happened.”

Community Reaction

The discovery has brought closure to a community that had been anxiously awaiting news. Friends and family have set up a memorial fund in Wells' honor. The area where he was found is known for strong currents and treacherous terrain, which authorities say likely contributed to the accident.

“Our thoughts are with the Wells family during this difficult time,” Sheriff Pace said. “We hope this brings some peace.”
