Emergency services have uncovered a massive haul of cocaine worth millions of dollars after responding to a fire at a boat ramp in Queensland. The discovery was made when firefighters were called to a blaze involving a crane-mounted truck at Midge Point, north of Mackay, on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Fire Leads to Drug Discovery
First responders arrived at the boat ramp on Jimmys Rock Road around 8:05 AM local time to find the truck fully engulfed in flames. Nearby, they spotted several suspicious packages. Queensland Police later confirmed that the packages contained cocaine, with an estimated street value of $14 million.
According to police, approximately 40 kilograms of the illicit drug were found. Authorities believe the cocaine may have originated from overseas. The truck fire and the packages are now the focus of an ongoing investigation by the Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch.
Police Appeal for Information
Investigators are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of the Midge Point boat ramp between midnight and 8:15 AM on the day of the incident to come forward. They are particularly interested in any relevant information, CCTV footage, or dashcam recordings that could assist the inquiry.
Police have also warned the public not to touch any additional packages that may be discovered and to report them immediately. Anyone with information can contact Policelink via their website or by phone.
The discovery of such a large quantity of cocaine highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking along the Queensland coast. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the origin of the drugs and any connections to broader criminal networks.
