Car rego subsidy rush crashes Service Victoria app

Victoria's public services app and website have experienced a major traffic jam as residents rush to secure a 20 per cent discount on their car registration. The scheme, which began on Monday, allows Victorians to apply for a rebate through the Service Victoria app. However, early Monday morning, the details on how to apply were missing from the app, and by late morning, the app had crashed entirely.

An error message in the app read: “We can’t connect to the server for this app or website at this time. There might be too much traffic or a configuration error.” Similarly, users attempting to log in via a computer were greeted with: “We’re experiencing a few technical issues. We apologise for any inconvenience. Please try again later.”

Rebate eligibility and savings

To qualify for the rebate, Victorian motorists must have paid their registration between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. Eligible drivers can apply from Monday until July 31 to receive a 20 per cent refund, saving up to $186 per vehicle. The scheme applies only to personal light vehicles, including cars, utes, motorbikes, and any other vehicle weighing less than 4.5 tonnes.

At 11:42 am, when the state government issued a press release, the website remained inaccessible. Government Services Minister Ingrid Stitt stated: “Log into Services Victoria and get 20 per cent off your rego – from today.”

Context of cost-of-living relief

Monday's vehicle cost-of-living relief scheme coincides with the resumption of public transport fares in Victoria. Earlier this year, due to skyrocketing fuel costs, the state government made all public transport free for April and May. Starting Monday, public transport across the state is offered at half price for the remainder of the year.
