A 51-year-old man plunged to his death during a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday night, according to police.
Incident Details
Officers responding to a 911 emergency call at approximately 9:51 p.m. discovered the man unconscious and unresponsive, with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position, the New York City Police Department said in a statement. He was transported from the iconic midtown Manhattan arena to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released his name.
The Connecticut-based rock band Goose was performing the second of a two-night concert booking at the venue. The group posted a statement on Facebook, saying it was “deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn of the tragic event that occurred.”
Venue Context
Madison Square Garden, often simply called the Garden, had recently been the center of the city’s attention as the home of the New York Knicks during their run to their first national basketball championship in over 50 years, defeating the San Antonio Spurs. The arena also hosts political rallies but is primarily known for concerts and basketball games.
Saturday night’s incident occurred inside the venue, and as of Sunday morning, it was not clear from what height the man fell. The investigation is ongoing.
