DRC Superfan 'Lumumba Vea' Stuns as Living Statue

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a peculiar figure has captivated global audiences: a man in a red suit, yellow shirt, and blue pants, standing completely still on a plinth amid Democratic Republic of Congo supporters for entire matches. This 'living statue' is Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a Congolese superfan who embodies the persona 'Lumumba Vea' to honor Patrice Lumumba, the DRC's first prime minister.

Who Is Lumumba Vea?

Mboladinga's stoic performance replicates the statue of Patrice Lumumba in Kinshasa. Lumumba, who led the DRC after independence from Belgium in June 1960, was assassinated in 1961 following a coup by Joseph-Desire Mobutu. He is revered as a pan-African martyr and symbol of Congolese nationalism. US civil rights activist Malcolm X called him “the greatest black man who ever walked the African continent.”

In an interview with CNN, Mboladinga explained: “Patrice Lumumba is a symbol of unity – the one who taught Congolese to stand and to be proud.”

Rise to Prominence

Mboladinga gained fame during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he stood motionless for every DRC match. However, World Cup attendance faced hurdles: quarantine restrictions due to Ebola kept him from the opening match against Portugal. The DRC squad persuaded President Félix Tshisekedi to include him in the official delegation, allowing him to attend the second match against Colombia. Visa issues forced him to miss the 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan on Sunday.

How Does He Do It?

Mboladinga trains rigorously to maintain his stillness. “Believe it or not, but I do practise,” he told CNN Sports. “I can actually practice 20 days out of a month, but I’ll also take a lot of rest.” Mental fortitude is equally crucial: “I am a living statue. The climate has no impact on me. My job is not just to stand there, but rather to communicate energy, strength and power to the players. That is what I am focusing on.” He added, “I do not foresee a time when I’m actually going to let go and lower my hand – I will get my job done.”

Historic World Cup Run

The Democratic Republic of Congo has advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in history, ensuring at least one more opportunity for 'Lumumba Vea' to support his team in his unique, unwavering style.
